Est\u00e1n muy bien adaptadas a las bajas temperaturas, por lo que son comunes en aguas \u00e1rticas y ant\u00e1rticas.  Las diatomeas representan el primer escal\u00f3n en la cadena tr\u00f3fica. El krill se alimenta de diatomeas y las grandes ballenas lo hacen del krill. El \u00e9xito de las diatomeas reside en su adaptabilidad y en su alta tasa de multiplicaci\u00f3n. Pero adem\u00e1s, su mundo microsc\u00f3pico encierra una gran belleza, como ha demostrado Paul Hargreaves, profesor em\u00e9rito del Instituto Oceanogr\u00e1fico Harbor Branch (EE UU), que se ha dedicado a fotografiarlas con ayuda del microscopio electr\u00f3nico y le ha pedido a la artista Faye Darling.
